The song was Paperback Writer, and Paul wanted his bass to sound as loud as those heard on Motown records. Paul switched from his trademark Hofner bass to a Rickenbacker, but still wanted more. Engineer Geoff Emerick tried something unusual: he had technicians wire up a speaker as a microphone and then placed it in front of the bass amplifier. They had to work to keep the phonograph needle from jumping out of the groove. The also used this on side B, Rain.
